The original course, designed by James Braid, was only 9 holes long and is today's front 9. The original clubhouse was on the opposite side of Towers Lane to today's clubhouse, located close to the 5th tee.
When the old clubhouse burnt down in 1970, one of the only things left after the fire was the frame of the old piano. This was buried next to the 2nd green - hence the hump now referred to as "the piano".
The extra 9 holes were added in the late 60s & early 70s to make a challenging but enjoyable par 70 course over 6,275yds.
The course is generally described as parklands, mostly flat and with an interesting complement of trees and lakes.
